Last week a checkout lady at Savers actually made a joke / reference to those “Ernest” movies from the 80s. “Know-whut-i-mean Vern, know-whut-i-mean!” It was like spotting a rare bird. Or a freak sense of humor untouched by the Larry The Cable Guys and Jeff Foxworthys of the world. A time capsule of cringe-inducing rural humor, I was for a split second transported back to 1988, when Jim Varney saved Christmas and spawned a few hundred thousand encore presentations on Sunday afternoon television. I should have asked if she did a good “Dorf” impression.
